The Key to Life

Chiang Mai, Thailand’s second largest city, lies about 435 miles northwest of Bangkok.  It is the preferred base for exploring northern Thailand and a jumping off point for adventures in Burma and Laos.

Home to 200,000 people and 300 temples, Chiang Mai is often idealized as a quaint, moated, walled city surrounded by mountains.

We discovered it to be modern while still managing to maintain its charm and sense of place.  Still, like any growing city, it is grappling with rapid development and pollution.

It is also gaining a reputation as a center for Asian-influenced health and wellness.

Early in our trip planning we had pegged it as a place to spend an extended period of time, giving the kids a chance to make good progress on school work.

We spent our first few days there exploring the city, sightseeing and taking note of all the ways we could improve our health while in town.

After a few days I came across one spa that was clearly differentiating itself from the hundreds of other clones.  Janrawee House bills itself as an alternative spa that allows people to “Detoxify for Real Beauty.”

They had my attention.

What is their version of “Detox,” you ask?  Here’s part of their sales pitch:

Detox or Colon Irrigation is a safe, efficiency and painless procedure in cleansing the colon with 25 liters of warm purified water, which slowly released into the body via the sterile tube that inserted into the rectum 2 inches deep.”

Oh my.

How does one know if one needs their colon cleaned?  Here’s a handy checklist of symptoms the spa suggests you watch for:

  • Chronic constipation, hard to excrete, non-excrete
  • Flatulence, bloated, belch, always break wind
  • Stomach-ache, loose bowel, liquid excrete
  • Easy fatigue, bad breath mouth disease and bad body odour

And the main benefit of “Detox”?

Exercise intestine movement the strong and work intestine could help waste pushing out of the intestine faster and have no substance left-over which may cause toxins.

Thanks, but I think I’ll pass.  I’m sticking with Thai foot massage therapy.

Still, I do remember the words of wisdom that became a mantra around the first office I worked in:  “The key to life is a healthy colon,” my friend used to say.

So true, so true.

I’m glad you decided against the colonic irrigation! Foot massage sounds much more pleasant!!

I’ll take your word for it that the treatment will cure what ails you –but if I had those symptoms I think I’d just quit eating and drinking and walk the country side living on roots and berries–you made the right choice –otherwise –something tells me cooking class wouldn’t have been as appealing
