Not long after publication of the highly regarded In Patagonia, writer Bruce Chatwin was strongly criticized for fictionalized anecdotes of real people, places and events.
Nicholas Shakespeare, Chatwin’s biographer, later responded to critics by saying: “He tells not a half-truth, but a truth and a half.”
Not a bad sentiment.
Forgive us if we misplace a detail or streamline events for the sake of narrative. These are travel stories. Emphasis on the word story.
It’s the truth and a half we’re after.
