I spent a week in Ecuador a few years ago with trips to Quito, Cuenca, Otavalo, Banos and a couple of full day ventures into the mountains. $30 makes for a comfortable stay (excl Galapagos) with reasonable accom but using local buses. Ecuador was cheaper than Peru for me and it felt a very safe country to me.

Sounds like you had a blast. I am so glad you enjoyed the Galapagos, but then again, I guess how could you not?

Just a note, we stayed at Mama Hilda’s and our room was not heated. Some rooms have a fireplace, but some don’t. There is a great fireplace in the main dining area though, and they load you up with blankets if your room does not have a fireplace.

Nice post! Makes me want to go back to Ecuador. It was the 2nd country on my RTW trip and I too loved the Galapagos. I also stayed at the San Francisco de Quito (thanks to my Galapagos tour) and loved Old town. I did the Cotopaxi hike/bike ride down too which was tough (rickety bikes) and amazing (great views). Wish I had gone to Mindo.
