Always pack plenty of food for those long bus trips. You never can tell what kind of food (if any) your going to be offered.
I could never sleep on the bus, even on the full-cama trips. After our bus rides, we would end up checking into the nearest full service hotel and sleeping an extra 4 to 5 hours before heading on to our destination. Sounds like you did the same after getting to Salta. Wise move.
